Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla brought their signature flair to the premiere of Sitaare Zameen Par, dressing the entire cast in bespoke ensembles crafted especially for the occasion. In a heartwarming meeting with Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh, and the radiant young stars of the film, the celebrated designer duo shared conversations about fashion, style, and the joy of self-expression.
While Abu Sandeep are no strangers to high glamour, this project holds a particularly special place in their hearts. Longstanding champions of individuality, they are known for redefining norms and celebrating authenticity. Designing for the Sitaare felt like a natural extension of their ethos—a seamless blend of creativity and individualism.
Reflecting on the experience, Sandeep shared, “I was touched by how enthusiastic and vocal the children were about their looks! They had the most adorable requests—some wanted their nails and hair done, while others wanted to dress like Aamir, Shah Rukh, Salman—you name it. Simran dreamt of being a princess. It was easily one of the most memorable highlights of our careers.”
In order to ensure a sense of unity and avoid any form of comparison, Abu Sandeep adopted an approach of subtle standardisation—each ensemble designed to be equally special. Yet within this framework, they have thoughtfully honoured individual requests, ensuring that each young star exudes their unique sparkle.
Drawing inspiration from the film’s title and spirit, Abu Sandeep designed custom outfits featuring a recurring star motif—a powerful symbol of uniqueness and brilliance. Rendered in varied embroidery styles and techniques, the motif encapsulates the film’s message: that every individual shines in their own way.
For the grand night, Abu Sandeep gave the Sitaare complete, head-to-toe looks, with comfort as a top priority. Luxurious natural fabrics and meticulous, skin-friendly embroidery ensured that even the most ornate ensembles were soft and wearable.
Looking like true heroes, the boys wore black sherwanis and jackets accented with Ajrakh and Bandhani, worn over the softest muslin shirts. Simran, channeling her inner princess, dazzled in a dreamy Aabla skirt adorned with hand-embroidered sparkle motifs, paired with a complementing ruffled blouse.
Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh were resplendent in Abu Sandeep’s iconic Chikankari. Aamir wore an elegant off-white sherwani over an intricately detailed inner kurta. Genelia was a vision to behold in an off-white and beige saree, worn with a glistening ‘Pearl Stone’ blouse. Her saree, like every Chikankari marvel by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, is a one-of-a-kind garment that is handmade by the most talented female artisans in Lucknow. It took over 8 months to make.
The designers shared, “We were absolutely delighted when Team Sitaare Zameen Par approached us for a personal collaboration. Aamir Khan is a phenomenal director and actor—everything he touches turns to gold. We began our journeys around the same time, nearly four decades ago, and it feels meaningful to collaborate on something so heartfelt. Genelia is an absolute sweetheart, and the children were pure joy. Seeing their smiles was truly the most rewarding part of it all.”
